Frequently Asked Questions

What is better and inground basketball goal or portable?
There is really no comparison, inground basketball goals are much better than portable basketball hoops. However, there are times when you have no choice but to use a portable basketball goal. If you find yourself in that situation stay away from Lifetimw, there are the cheapest and lowest quality basketball goals made. They sell a lot of goals because they have small price tags. But remember that with basketball goals quality is closely related to price.

Should I use antifreeze in a portable base during the winter months?
Yes you should use a pet and child frienly anti-freeze. However, follow the manufacturers directions.

What other maintenance is required to weatherize my basketball system?
Portable basketball systems are built specifically to withstand all types of weather. All of our parts are designed to handle both cold and hot temperatures, so there really isn't much maintenance needed to prepare your system for weather changes. However, it is usually a good idea to take down the nylon net when the system is not being used so it does not deteriorate over time.

What maintenance is needed for a basketball hoop in the spring?
Even though our systems are built to withstand harsh weather conditions, there are a few things we suggest doing in the spring to ensure optimal performance.

  1. Make sure to check the water level in your portable base and fill it to capacity.
  2. Check and replace the nylon net if worn or damaged.
  3. Though not required, it is usually a good idea to spray lubricant on pivot points or moving parts for optimal performance.

Is it better to use sand or water in my portable base?
Portable basketball goals use water in bases to test the performance of the basketball systems. Manufacturers ensure the systems can handle up to 40 mph winds without tipping over. However, sand is also a good option, and each one has pros and cons.

Sand: Is about 45% denser than water, making it more difficult to tip the system over. This is good if you slam-dunk a lot, but bad if you regularly move the portable system around. Sand is more expensive and difficult to put in the base, but sand does not evaporate like water.

Water: Is cheaper and usually takes less effort to obtain. However, water can also evaporate over time, making it necessary to check the water level in a base regularly.

Can you tell me which brands on the market are made in China?
The Standard For Unqualified Made In USA Claims

What is the standard for a product to be called Made in USA without qualification?

For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The term "United States," as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions.

What does "all or virtually all" mean?

"All or virtually all" means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. That is, the product should contain no or negligible foreign content.

Our Barbarian Destroyer is made in the USA. However, the glass is produced in China. There are no manufacturers of high quality tempered glass in the USA. ALL basketball goals sold in the USA use glass from China, they have no choice.

How long will it take to get my basketball hoop?
We stock every item we sell so most orders are shipped in 24 hours. The average transit time is 4-5 days. We will notify you immediately if there is a rare delay. We will email you the tracking information once your order has shipped.

What size backboard should I get?
Every shot possible in the game of basketball can be made on a 54" wide backboard. How you choose a basketball goal backboard size is up to you. Regulation size is 72" wide so it really comes down to court/driveway size and personal preference. 54" wide is a great size for the average 2 car wide driveway or 30' X 30' court. 60" wide looks good in 2-3 car wide driveways and smaller half-courts. 72" wide backboards are big and can look out of place in smaller driveways and courts but are perfect for larger areas.

Look for 54" or 60" size boards with 3/8" thick glass and 72" boards with 1/2" glass for gym-correct rebound. 3/8" glass on a 54" or 60" backboard provides the same rebound as a regulation 72" backoard made of 1/2" glass but has the advantage of being lighter making it easier to adjust the rim height for your little ones. We use 1/2" thick glass only on our regulation 72" systems, same as used in the NBA and NCAA.

How important is pole size?
Basketball goal pole size is important but more important is pole thickness. Steel thickness is measured in gauges, the lower the number the thicker the steel, 11 gauge is thicker (stronger) than 14 gauge. Bigger is not always better. Some brands offer a big pole but it is usually a thinner steel. An 11 gauge, 4" pole for example would be stronger than a thinner 5" pole. 7 guage is the best thickness offered on most systems.

What is the base plate for?
The base plate is just a template to hold the bolts in the correct position while the concrete is drying for the basketball goal anchor kit. It can be left in place with no effect on the pole or it can be removed and thrown away.

Is 850 lbs of concrete needed for an in-ground pole?
Yes, 820 lbs. is used to fill the 24" x 24" hole dug in the ground, and another 80 lbs. is used to fill the pole.

What type of antifreeze is used to protect a water-filled portable?
A non-toxic antifreeze is used, and two gallons will adequately keep the water from freezing solid.

What is the purpose of a ground sleeve?
The ground sleeve is used for easy removal of the pole and helps reduce corrosion. They typically do not work to the customers advantage.

Do I have to use the ground sleeve?
Barbarian Basketball Systems Inc. never use any ground sleeves, and do not recommend using the ground sleeve. If it is not used all warranty on the unit would be void.

How do I install the ground sleeve?
Insert the bottom pole section into the ground sleeve. Fill hole 1/3 full of concrete. Insert ground sleeve in center of hole until the flange is level with the playing surface. Then fill the hole completely with concrete.

How do I install the net clips?
The two outer hoods on the net clip must face towards the inside of the rim. Insert the larger hole in the net clip into the rim stud, push up in the net clip, then slide net clip to the left, locking or snapping it securely into position ensure the clip is pushed flush to the rim when sliding across. These are rarely used any longer.

Are pole pads and backboard pads included with Barbarian Basketball Goals?
Yes. Every basketball goal that we make and sell with the exception of the GC-5X54 comes with high quality backboard padding and pole padding.

What is hot dip gavanizing?
Hot-dip galvanizing is a form of galvanization. It is the process of coating iron, steel or aluminum with a thin zinc layer, by passing the metal through a molten bath of zinc at a temperature of around 860 degrees F (460 degrees C). When exposed to the atmosphere, the pure zinc (Zn) reacts with oxygen (O2) to form zinc oxide (ZnO), which further reacts with carbon dioxide (CO2) to form zinc carbonate (ZnCO3), a usually dull grey, fairly strong material that stops further corrosion in many circumstances, protecting the steel below from the elements. Galvanized steel is widely used in applications where rust resistance is needed, and can be identified by the crystallization patterning on the surface (often called a "spangle").
